George Graham to end a lifetime of local authority service.

After seven years at the helm of the South Yorkshire Pensions Authority (SYPA), George Graham is to retire at the end of the year.

Since he became the director of the £11bn pension scheme in 2018, Graham has played a key role in the authority’s development.

This included overseeing the transition of assets into the Border to Coast pool, creating a joint venture with Royal London to manage UK farmland and enhancing services for scheme members and employers.

Graham also held senior positions at other local authorities, including the county councils of Lincolnshire, Lancashire, Oxfordshire and Northamptonshire.

Councillor Jayne Dunn, SYPA’s chair, said: “George has made a significant contribution to making SYPA the organisation it is today, and to the wider development of the LGPS.

“His successor will have large shoes to fill,” she added.

Reflecting on his time at the authority, Graham described SYPA as a special organisation and he is grateful for the support I have received from elected members and his team in developing the organisation and services.

“However, with the next round of changes to the scheme coming down the track it feels like the right time to hand over the reins, although I hope to be able to continue to contribute to the LGPS in various ways,” he added.

South Yorkshire Pensions Authority will begin the search for its next director this summer.
