These are difficult times for institutional investors who want to make the world greener and fairer.
President Trump has pulled out of the Paris Accord, while our government appears to be watering-down their sustainability goals.
In a more extreme move against efforts to achieve net zero, some lawmakers in the US are suing asset managers over fears that their attempts to phase out coal could send energy prices higher. This has led to money managers quitting net zero-focused investor alliances. Such apathy comes at a time when environmental challenges are getting more acute with wildfires and floods dominating the news.
So given the political climate, have the net zero and social justice challenges adopted by many pension schemes and insurers become harder to achieve?
This will be the theme of portfolio institutional’s fifth annual ESG Club Conference in October.
For the first time this has been extended to a full-day event to keep investment professionals better informed of the latest sustainability trends and best practice.
A programme of debates and fireside chats have been carefully chosen to tackle many of the challenges that the responsible investment teams of pension schemes, insurers, charitable foundations and family offices face today and tomorrow.
Reserve your seat here to watch your peers discuss:
- ESG and Trump 2.0
- The changing regulatory landscape
- Technology and the sustainable challenge
Time | Event |
---|---|
09:00 – 09:30 | Registration and breakfast |
09:30 – 09:35 | Welcome from the Chair |
09:35 – 10:35 | Trump proofing: Is the climate transition now more unlikely and should investors prepare for failure? – With the US setting tariffs on imports and pumping more oil out of the ground to reduce inflation, what impact will such policies have on institutional investors’ net zero targets? If we are not going to achieve net-zero by 2050, do portfolios need to change? Are portfolios resilient enough to withstand missing the 2050 target? |
10:35 – 11:15 | Fireside Chat I |
11:15 – 11:35 | Coffee break |
11:35 – 12:35 | ESG compliance: Driving change or a growing governance burden? Institutional investors are being tasked with producing an increasing number of reports to show how they are protecting their stakeholders from various environmental risks. The introduction of such compliance has been effective in getting climate on the agenda and getting people to take it seriously, but with schemes having to boost their recruitment to manage their growing list of regulatory obligations, has the governance burden of ESG become too onerous? |
12:35 – 13:35 | Lunch and networking |
13:35 – 14:35 | Biodiversity – Turning theory into real-world outcomes Institutional investors understand the importance of preserving and restoring nature in decarbonising the world, but are we too focused on the potential risks such issues bring to portfolios? How are institutional investors and their managers integrating what is an important, but not widely understood, issue into their ESG strategy? How are they taking the leap from theory into practice? |
14:35 – 15:15 | Fireside Chat II |
15:15 – 15:20 | Closing remarks |
15:20 – 17:00 | Networking drinks |
