About the discussion
2014 looks set to be another record-breaking year for the bulk annuities market. March saw the largest ever deal arranged by a pension scheme in the UK as ICI transacted a £3.6bn buy-in with Legal & General and Prudential. With yield normalisation around the corner and funding levels improving, de-risking is top of the agenda for many pension funds. However, in a capacity constrained market, schemes will have to compete for the attention of insurance providers. Preparation will be essential in determining which funds can get deals done.
The expert panel will discuss the following:
- Outlook for the bulk annuities market – what is driving interest in this market?
- Buy-in versus buyout – the various pros and cons, and how to determine which solution is possible
- Getting a house in order – what do pension funds need to do administratively and operationally in preparation for buyout or buy-in?
- What action needs to be taken from an asset allocation perspective to prepare for buyout, such as divesting from illiquid securities?
- How much capacity exists in the bulk annuities market and what implications does that have for schemes wanting to de-risk?
- What factors should schemes consider when choosing a bulk annuities partner?
- What affects the perception of fair value in the pricing of bulk annuities? How much influence will pension funds be able to exert in this regard?
- Does the bulk annuity option really put an end to pensions risk?
- What impact will the changes announced in the Budget have on the buyout market?
Confirmed panellists:
- Bob Hymas, chief financial officer, Merchant Navy Officers Pension Fund
- Dominic Grimley, risk settlement adviser, Aon Hewitt
- Roger Mattingly, director, PAN Trustees
- Martyn Philips, JLT Employee Benefits
