Barnett Waddingham founding partner Adrian Waddingham is poised to take a year-long sabbatical to become a Sheriff of London.

The actuarial consultant will take a year out of the industry to become a Sheriff on 27 September, at which point he will move into the Old Bailey.

“I have done rather well out of the City and it is nice to give something back,” said Waddingham (pictured). “It is an important job to play a part in promoting the financial City of London. It will be a hectic, if exciting, year – actuaries don’t get out much so this is a special opportunity.”

He added: “The prospect of being a Sheriff from September is more excitement than an actuary normally gets. During my year as Master Actuary I got familiar with the City and who does what and that sowed the seeds of throwing my hat in the ring for the election.”

The formal election for the position is on Monday 24 June at the Guildhall, but since there are only two candidates this year for two Sheriff positions, the outcome is something of a foregone conclusion.

The roles are elected by the Liverymen of the City – the 23,000 or so members of the 107 Livery Companies – who choose two Sheriffs for the year starting in September.

Waddingham will be the ‘non-Aldermanic’ Sheriff while Sir Paul Judge will be ‘Aldermanic’ Sheriff. The latter can expect to become Lord Mayor of the City of London after his time as Sheriff.

Waddingham’s responsibilities will include ensuring the smooth running of the Old Bailey, the comfort of the judges and arranging banquets for visiting heads of state, as well as supporting the Lord Mayor during the year and accompanying the Mayor on some of the overseas trips which will promote the financial services of the City of London.

The incoming Lord Mayor is Cameron McKenna partner Fiona Woolf who will be only the second lady Lord Mayor in the City’s history.
